Learning to drive in Coimbatore means sharing the road with buses on Avinashi Road, two-wheelers weaving through Gandhipuram, and steep ghat roads on weekend trips. A good driving school teaches you to handle all of that calmly, not just to pass the licence test. This guide explains what to check before you join, how the licence steps work, and the warning signs of a poor school.
Driving licences in India are issued by vehicle class. The common ones are:
Tell the school exactly which classes you want. Many people take two-wheeler and car training together, which can save a trip for the test.
The process runs through the central Sarathi portal of the Parivahan system and your Regional Transport Office (RTO):
Fees, documents and slot booking change from time to time, so always check the current rules on the Sarathi portal before you start. Since 2021, central rules also allow accredited driver training centres, whose certified graduates may be exempted from the RTO driving test; ask a school directly whether it holds that accreditation and ask to see it.

If the trainer shouts, takes calls while you drive, or rushes you into heavy traffic on day one, that is a reason to change schools.
Many learners prefer a woman trainer. Ask whether the school has one and whether you can choose your trainer. Share your class timings with a family member, and do not hesitate to switch if you are uncomfortable.
A licence is only a start. Drive with an experienced person for the first few weeks, avoid night drives on unfamiliar roads, and build confidence before long trips. Before a first outstation drive, read our guide to the Coimbatore to Valparai trip, which explains the hairpin bends you will face on the ghat road.
Keep your own car in good shape too; our guide on choosing a car service centre in Coimbatore explains what to ask.
Decide which licence classes you need, visit two or three driving schools near you, sit in their training vehicle and ask for the package terms in writing. Check the current licence rules on the Sarathi portal. You can find driving schools listed in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Under the Motor Vehicles rules you must hold the learner's licence for at least 30 days before applying for the driving licence test. The learner's licence is valid for six months, so apply for the test within that period. Check the current process on the Sarathi (Parivahan) portal.
It depends on how comfortable you are on the road. Many schools offer a fixed package, but ask for extra sessions if you are not yet confident in traffic, on slopes and while parking. The aim is safe driving, not only passing the test.
Many schools help with the online application and slot booking on the Sarathi portal. You still have to attend the test yourself. Ask what the help costs and keep copies of every receipt.
Learn in the kind of car you expect to drive. Most schools train in manual cars; if you want an automatic, ask whether the school has one before you pay.
