VOC Park: A Family-Friendly Green Space in Coimbatore
VOC Park, named after the great freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, is one of Coimbatore’s best-known public parks. For decades it was famous for its small zoo; today the park is known mainly for its trees, its children’s attractions and the large ground where the city holds Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations and seasonal exhibitions.
Location and Access
- Location: VOC Park is in the heart of Coimbatore city and is easy to reach from Gandhipuram and the railway station.
- Accessibility: Town buses, taxis and autos all go there. Parking can be tight during exhibitions and on official event days.
What Happened to the Zoo?
The VOC Zoo once housed animals such as deer, monkeys, crocodiles and birds, and was a favourite school outing. Its licence was suspended by the Central Zoo Authority because the zoo did not meet national standards for space and upkeep, and after the animals were moved it closed to visitors in January 2022. In July 2025 the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation proposed developing the zoo area as an aviary park under a public-private partnership, subject to the state government's approval. Until something new opens, there are no zoo animals to see at VOC Park.
What You Can Still Enjoy
- Trees and greenery: the park has a large collection of trees - reported to be over 200 species, including sandalwood - and shaded lawns.
- Children’s attractions: the park has had a children’s play area, a toy train and an aquarium. Which of these are running changes from time to time, so check at the gate.
- Exhibitions and expos: the VOC Park ground regularly hosts trade fairs, shopping expos and themed exhibitions, especially around festivals and holidays.
- Official events: the city’s Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations are held at the VOC Park ground.
Visiting Information
- Timings and fees: these change with whatever is running at the park and with exhibitions on the ground. Check locally or with the Corporation before you go (as of October 2026).
- Facilities: expect basic facilities; carry drinking water for children.
Where to See Animals Instead
If your children wanted to see animals, consider a trip to a forest area or wildlife destination in the region with proper permits and guided safaris, such as the Valparai and Anamalai side, where forest rules apply. For a natural history outing inside the city, the Gass Forest Museum is another option.

Visitor Tips
- Visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
- Check the news for exhibitions on the ground - they bring crowds, stalls and parking pressure.
- Help keep the park clean and follow the rules posted at the gate.
VOC Park remains a green, central open space with a long place in Coimbatore’s memory, even without its zoo. Check what is open before you go, and you can still enjoy a relaxed hour among its trees.
