Coimbatore is often treated as a stopover on the way to Ooty or Kerala, but a single day in Kovai can be well spent. The city has old museums, famous temples, a hill shrine, a waterfall at the edge of the Western Ghats and plenty for children. This page lists the main places by area and gives three simple route plans, with links to our detailed page on each one.
Plan by direction. The places below sit in four clusters - the city centre, Avinashi Road in the east, the western hills and the Mettupalayam road in the north. Crossing the city twice can easily cost an hour in traffic, so choose one or two clusters for the day.
Timings and fees change. Museums, parks and forest spots set their own hours, weekly holidays and entry fees, and the forest spots close during heavy rain. We have left those details out on purpose; check the official page or call before you go.
Inside the Forest College campus on Cowley Brown Road, the Gass Forest Museum was opened to the public on 15 April 1902. It is named after Horace Archibald Gass, then Conservator of Forests. Expect stuffed animals such as a gaur and a leopard, timber and sandalwood specimens, and a wildlife diorama added during the 2015 renovation. It is a good first stop for school-age children - read our Gass Forest Museum guide.
VOC Park near the railway station has been a city park for decades. Its zoo, however, has been closed to visitors since 2022, and the larger animals were moved to other zoos in the state. In February 2025 the Corporation announced a plan to turn the old zoo area into a bird park, so check the current status first. Our older VOC Park page describes the park as it was.
Koniamman, the city's guardian goddess, and the Kottai Eswaran temple are both within two kilometres of the railway station. The Puliakulam Vinayagar, one of the largest Ganesha idols in Tamil Nadu, is a short drive away. All three are covered in our temples guide.
Avinashi Road runs from the city centre past Peelamedu towards the airport. Three museums on this road make a good half day for anyone who likes machines, cars or textiles.
The museum remembers G.D. Naidu, the Coimbatore inventor and industrialist, and shows machines and gadgets from his workshops. Read more in our G.D. Naidu exhibition page.
Next to it is the Gedee Car Museum, with vintage and classic cars from around the world. See our Gedee Car Museum page.
Coimbatore grew as a cotton and textile city, and this museum tells that story through spinning machinery and textile art. It fits well after the car museum - see our textile museum page.
If you want the wider background first, read why Coimbatore is called the Manchester of South India.
The CODISSIA trade fair complex near the airport hosts industrial and consumer exhibitions through the year. If one is running on your date, it is worth an hour.
For shopping and food courts, Prozone Mall is on the Sathyamangalam road at Saravanampatti.
About 7 km west of the centre on the Noyyal river, Perur is Coimbatore's most celebrated old Shiva temple, known for the carvings of its Kanaka Sabha. See our Perur temple guide.
The Kovai Kondattam amusement and water park is also in the Perur area, if you have children with you.
The Murugan temple on Marudhamalai hill, north-west of the city, is the city's best-known hill shrine. You can climb the steps from the foothill or go up by road - read our Marudhamalai Adivaram guide first.
Kovai Kutralam, about 32 km west of the city below the Siruvani dam, is a waterfall inside forest land controlled by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. Visitors enter through the forest checkpost during set hours, and the falls are closed during heavy rain. See our Kovai Kutralam page.
The Siruvani dam above the falls supplies drinking water to Coimbatore, and access to the dam itself is restricted; our Siruvani waterfalls page has more on the area.
At the foot of the Velliangiri hills, roughly 30 km west of the city, the Isha Yoga Centre has the 112-foot Adiyogi face, unveiled in February 2017. It is the most photographed spot near Coimbatore. The evening is the busiest time. Read our Adiyogi page before you go.
Inside the centre is the Dhyanalinga, a domed meditation hall that is open to visitors of any faith; silence is kept inside. See our Dhyanalinga page.
On the way to Ooty, the Mettupalayam road has the Karamadai Ranganathar temple, Then Tirupathi at Jadayampalayam and, near Mettupalayam, the Black Thunder water park. This cluster suits travellers who are heading up the hills the next day.
| Plan | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Culture and museums | Gass Forest Museum, Koniamman temple | Avinashi Road museums | Prozone Mall or a CODISSIA fair |
| Temples and hills | Perur temple | Marudhamalai | Adiyogi at Isha |
| Nature and family | Kovai Kutralam (forest hours) | Kovai Kondattam, Perur | Adiyogi at Isha |
For a longer temple-focused day, see our guide to famous temples in Coimbatore. If you need a cab, a hotel or a guide for the day, you can find local listings in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
A popular one-day plan covers the museums on Avinashi Road (G.D. Naidu museum, Gedee Car Museum, the textile museum), the Gass Forest Museum near the Forest College, the Perur temple and Marudhamalai, ending at Adiyogi at the Isha Yoga Centre for the evening. Pick one direction per half day to save travel time.
The zoo at VOC Park has been closed to visitors since 2022 and its larger animals were moved to other zoos. In February 2025 the Coimbatore Corporation announced plans for a bird park on the site. Check the current status before you plan a visit.
The Adiyogi statue is at the Isha Yoga Centre at the foot of the Velliangiri hills, roughly 30 km west of Coimbatore city. Allow about an hour by road each way, more in weekend traffic.
Kovai Kutralam falls near Siruvani is under the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. Visitors enter through the forest checkpost during set hours, and the falls are closed during heavy rain. Check with the Forest Department or the district tourism page before you go.
