A dripping tap can wait a day. A burst line under the kitchen floor or a blocked sewer on a Sunday cannot. When you need a plumber in Coimbatore, you often have to decide quickly, and that is when people end up paying for the same repair twice. This guide explains what to check before you hire, what to ask, and how to tell a careful plumber from a careless one.
Plumbing work falls into three rough groups, and each needs a slightly different kind of person.
Telling the plumber which group your job belongs to helps you get a realistic time and price.
For bathrooms, kitchens and new homes, get at least two written quotes and compare them line by line:
| Item | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Number of points | Every tap, shower, flush, basin and floor trap listed |
| Pipe type and brand | Named brand and class, not "good quality pipe" |
| Fittings and sanitary ware | Who supplies them - you or the plumber |
| Labour | Separate from materials |
| Testing | Pressure test included, with you present |
| Cleanup | Removal of debris and cut pipes |
A quote that looks much cheaper often leaves out testing, uses unnamed pipes, or expects you to buy fittings separately.
Hard water. Many Coimbatore homes depend on borewell water, which is often hard. It leaves white scale on taps, shower heads and heater elements, and makes valves stiff. If your fittings wear out quickly, ask the plumber about filters or a softener, and plan for regular descaling. For drinking water, see our guide on choosing a water purifier service centre.
Mixed supply. Many houses have both Corporation supply and a borewell feeding different tanks. Make sure the plumber knows which line is which before cutting anything, so drinking water and borewell water are not mixed by mistake.
Terrace and tank leaks. Overhead tanks and terraces take the full summer sun. Cracked tank inlets and seepage around pipes through the roof slab are common. These often need a plumber and a waterproofing person together.
New connections. New water and sewer connections are applied for with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation or your local body. A plumber cannot arrange these privately; they do the internal line work once the connection is approved.
Motor pumps, pressure pumps and water heaters involve both water and electricity. If the motor trips, hums without pumping, or the heater gives a shock, switch off the power and call an electrician as well as a plumber. Our guide on finding reliable electricians in Coimbatore explains what to check.
Write down the problem, when it started and any sound or smell you noticed; take a photo of the leak. Call two plumbers for anything bigger than a tap, ask the questions above, and keep the bills. If you need names to start with, you can find local plumbing services in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Ask neighbours, your apartment association or your building contractor for names, then check two or three of them yourself. A good plumber will come to inspect before quoting, explain the cause of the problem, give a written estimate for bigger jobs and tell you which brand of pipes and fittings they will use.
Small repairs are usually charged per visit plus parts, and bigger work such as new bathroom lines per job or per point. Whatever the method, agree on it before work starts and ask for the parts to be listed separately. Rates vary, so compare at least two quotes for large jobs.
Many Kovai homes use borewell water, which is often hard. Hard water leaves white scale on taps, shower heads and heater elements. A plumber can advise on filters or a softener, and regular descaling helps fittings last longer.
Yes. New water and sewer connections are applied for with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation or your local body, not arranged privately by a plumber. Your plumber can do the internal line work once the connection is approved.
