Coimbatore's engineering, arts and medical colleges and its IT parks and factories bring in thousands of students and working people every year, and PGs and hostels have grown around Gandhipuram, Peelamedu, Saravanampatti, Kuniyamuthur and other hubs. A good place makes a new city feel easy; a bad one causes daily stress. This checklist helps you choose, whether you are moving yourself or helping a son or daughter settle in.
Before You Search
- Location: time to college or office at peak hours, and bus routes. Short, safe travel matters more than a slightly lower rent.
- Budget: monthly rent, deposit, food, electricity if charged separately, laundry and Wi-Fi.
- Type: PG in a house, hostel with a warden, shared flat, or college hostel.
- Food: included meals, a kitchen you can use, or none.
Check the Licence for Women's Hostels
Tamil Nadu has a specific law: the Tamil Nadu Hostels and Homes for Women and Children (Regulation) Act, 2014. Hostels and homes for women and children must be run under a licence from the District Collector, and the Collector's office can inspect them. District administrations have repeatedly asked unregistered women's hostels to register.
When you visit a women's hostel or PG:
- Ask to see the licence and note its number.
- If they say it is "applied for" or cannot show it, ask the district social welfare office.
Visit Twice: Day and Night
In the day:
- See the actual room you will get, not a sample room.
- Check beds, mattresses, fans, lights, sockets, cupboard with a lock, and windows with grills.
- Open taps and flush the toilet; check bathrooms for cleanliness and hot water.
- Ask about water supply and power cuts: is there a backup?
In the evening:
- Street lighting and the walk from the bus stop.
- Who is at the gate, and how visitors are handled.
- Noise levels.
Safety Checklist
- Secure main gate with a guard or controlled entry.
- CCTV at entrances (not in rooms or bathrooms).
- A register of residents and visitors.
- Fire extinguishers, clear exits, and no locked emergency doors.
- First aid, and a known nearby clinic.
- Emergency contact numbers displayed.
Food and Hygiene
- Ask for the weekly menu and meal times; ask whether timings suit your college or shift.
- If possible, eat one meal there before joining.
- See the kitchen and the drinking water arrangement; our guide on water purifier service lists what a well-kept purifier looks like.
- Ask how often rooms and bathrooms are cleaned, and by whom.
Rules to Ask About
- Gate closing time, and what happens if you are late from work or an exam.
- Visitors, including parents, and where they can meet you.
- Cooking, electrical appliances (iron, kettle) and laundry.
- Leave and informing the warden.
Rules are not a problem as long as they are written down and applied fairly.
Money and the Agreement
- Get the monthly rent, deposit, what is included, notice period and deposit refund terms in writing.
- Ask about extra charges: electricity for AC, laundry, Wi-Fi.
- Pay by bank transfer or UPI, or get a signed receipt every month.
- Record the room's condition with photos on the day you move in.
For a shared flat or a portion of a house rather than a PG, our tenant checklist for renting a house in Coimbatore explains agreements and the Tamil Nadu tenancy law.
Talk to Current Residents
If you can, speak to one or two residents away from the owner. Ask about food, water, cleanliness, how complaints are handled, and whether deposits are returned on time.
Moving In
- Bring a lock for your cupboard, and keep valuables and documents secure.
- Save the warden's and a local friend's numbers.
- Share the address and the warden's contact with your family.
- Our guide on packers and movers in Coimbatore helps if you are shifting a lot of things.
Red Flags
- A women's hostel that cannot show a licence.
- No written terms, or refusal to give receipts.
- Rooms very different from what was shown online.
- No control over who enters the building.
- Pressure to pay the full deposit before you have seen the room.
- Residents who say deposits are not returned.
Next Steps
Shortlist two or three places near your college or office, visit each in the day and evening, check the licence where it applies, and get the terms in writing before you pay. You can find hostels and PGs listed in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do women's hostels in Tamil Nadu need a licence?
Yes. Under the Tamil Nadu Hostels and Homes for Women and Children (Regulation) Act, 2014, hostels and homes for women and children must be run under a licence granted by the District Collector. Ask the hostel to show its licence, and check with the district administration if in doubt.
What should I check before paying the deposit?
Visit in person, see the actual room and bathroom, meet the warden or owner, read the rules, and get the rent, deposit, notice period and refund terms in writing. Pay by bank transfer or get a signed receipt.
Is a PG different from a hostel?
A PG (paying guest) is usually a room in a house or building run by an owner, often with meals; a hostel is a larger facility with a warden and common rules. Both should give you clear terms, safe premises and receipts.
Should I visit at night?
It is a good idea. Seeing the street lighting, the gate, who is around and how the entry is controlled after dark tells you a lot about safety that a daytime visit cannot.
