When a parent is recovering from surgery, living with a long illness or simply needs help at home, many Coimbatore families look for a home nurse or an elder care attendant. It is a very personal hire: the person will be inside your home, often alone with someone who cannot easily speak up. This guide explains what to check before you choose a home nursing or elder care service in Kovai.
This is a guide to hiring, not medical advice. The treating doctor should decide what kind of care is needed and write the care plan.
Talk to the doctor before calling agencies. The answer changes who you hire:
Also decide the hours: a few hours a day, a 12-hour day or night shift, or 24-hour live-in care.
| Agency | Direct hire | |
|---|---|---|
| Screening | Agency should verify ID, background and training | You do all checks yourself |
| Leave and replacement | Agency sends a replacement | You arrange cover |
| Cost | Usually higher (agency margin) | Usually lower |
| Paperwork | Agreement with the agency | Agreement with the caregiver |
Many families start with an agency for the first months, then continue with a caregiver they trust.
Ask to meet or video-call the caregiver before they start, and involve your parent in the choice where possible.
Misunderstandings are the most common cause of trouble. Write a simple list and give a copy to the caregiver and the agency:
Treat the first two weeks as a trial. A family member should be present often, especially in the first days, to show the routine and watch how the caregiver handles your parent. Signs of good care: the person is clean, fed on time, medicines are given as written, and your parent seems comfortable with the caregiver.
Red flags: rough handling, frequent phone use while on duty, missing medicine doses, unexplained injuries or bruises, your parent seeming afraid, or money and items going missing. Raise concerns with the agency at once; do not wait.
Good caregivers stay longer when they are treated well. Give them proper food, a place to rest, their weekly off and timely payment. Long shifts with a bedridden patient are physically hard; plan relief so one person is not on duty day and night for weeks.
If you also need help with cleaning and cooking, that is usually a separate job; see our guide to hiring housekeeping services.
Home care works best with regular medical follow-up. Keep a simple daily record: blood pressure or sugar readings if the doctor asked for them, food, sleep, bowel movements, falls and anything unusual. Take it to each doctor visit. Call the doctor if there is any sudden change; the caregiver should never adjust medicines on their own.
Get the care plan from the doctor, decide the hours, speak to two or three agencies, verify the caregiver, write the duties down and stay closely involved in the first weeks. You can find home nursing and elder care agencies in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
An agency usually screens caregivers, arranges a replacement when someone leaves or falls sick, and handles payment of the caregiver. Hiring directly can cost less, but you must do the background checks, arrange leave cover and keep records yourself. Whichever you choose, put the duties, hours, payment and notice period in writing.
A qualified nurse has a nursing diploma or degree and can do tasks the doctor assigns, such as injections, wound dressing or catheter care. A caregiver or attendant helps with daily living: bathing, feeding, moving, toileting and company. Ask the treating doctor which one your family member needs, and ask the agency for the person's qualification certificate.
Ask the agency whether police verification has been done and ask to see the record, along with an ID proof, address proof and references from earlier families. If you hire directly, you can ask your local police station how to request verification of a domestic worker.
The care plan should come from the treating doctor: medicines and timings, diet, movement and exercise limits, warning signs, and when to call the doctor or an ambulance. Keep it written, near the bed, and share it with every caregiver.
