Cement and steel are two of the biggest material costs when you build a house in Coimbatore, and they decide how strong the structure will be. Most homeowners leave the choice to the contractor, but a few simple checks help you make sure you get what you pay for. This guide explains what to look for when buying cement and TMT steel in Kovai.
Your structural engineer or architect decides the cement type, concrete mix and steel grade for your building. This guide is about buying and checking materials, not structural design.
There are two common arrangements:
Our guide to choosing a building contractor covers contracts in more detail.
| Type | Common use | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement), grades 33, 43, 53 | Structural concrete where early strength matters | IS 269 |
| PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement) | General construction, masonry, plastering | IS 1489 (Part 1) |
| PSC (Portland Slag Cement) | Some structural and marine uses | IS 455 |
Ask your engineer which type and grade to use for foundations, columns, slabs, brickwork and plastering. Some builders use one type for everything; others change by stage.
TMT (thermo-mechanically treated) bars are the steel reinforcement in columns, beams, slabs and foundations. They are made to IS 1786, which defines grades such as Fe 415, Fe 500, Fe 500D, Fe 550 and Fe 550D. The number is the minimum yield strength; "D" grades are more ductile. Your structural drawings specify the grade and bar sizes (commonly 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 mm and larger).
Store bars off the ground on supports, covered from rain, sorted by diameter so the right size is used in each place. Do not store near salty or wet areas.
Good cement and steel can still give a weak structure if the concrete mix, water ratio, cover, lapping and curing are wrong. Ask your architect or structural engineer to inspect reinforcement before each concrete pour, and make sure slabs and columns are cured with water for the period the engineer specifies.
Waterproofing the terrace early also protects the structure; see our terrace waterproofing guide.
Get the cement type and steel grade from your engineer, compare dealer quotes, check bags and bars on delivery, store them correctly, and keep every bill. You can find cement, steel and building material dealers in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Both are used in houses. OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) gains strength faster and is often used where early strength matters. PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement) gains strength more slowly but is widely used for general building work, plastering and masonry. Follow your structural engineer's specification for each part of the work.
The number is the minimum yield strength in N/mm2. The 'D' grades have tighter limits on carbon, sulphur and phosphorus and higher elongation, which makes them more ductile. Your structural engineer decides the grade; do not change it on a dealer's advice.
Cement bags are printed with the week, month and year of manufacture. Buy recent stock, avoid bags with lumps or hardened corners, and use cement within the period your engineer recommends, as cement slowly loses strength when stored.
Ask for the weighbridge slip or weigh the bundles, and compare with the standard weight per metre for each bar diameter. A quick check is to measure and weigh a sample bar. The bill should show the brand, grade, diameter, number of bars or weight, and the rate.
