For working parents in Coimbatore, a good day care or creche is what makes the working day possible. It is also where your child will spend many waking hours, so the choice deserves more than a quick look at the play area. This guide gives a practical checklist for choosing a day care in Kovai.
A creche or day care looks after young children for most of the working day, often from infancy. A play school or preschool focuses on early learning for a few hours. Many centres offer both. If you mainly need a learning programme, see our guide to choosing a play school in Coimbatore.
Start With the Basics
- Location: close to home or your workplace, so either parent can reach quickly in an emergency.
- Timings: opening and closing times, late pick-up rules and charges, and holidays. Check that they match your working hours with a margin for traffic.
- Age groups: which ages they take and whether infants have a separate room.
- Registration: ask whether the centre is registered with any authority, and see the document. Rules for childcare centres can change, so check with the district social welfare office if in doubt.
Visit Before You Decide
Visit at least twice, once during a normal busy hour, not only at a scheduled tour time. Look for:
- Cleanliness: floors, toilets, nappy-changing area, kitchen and sleeping mats.
- Safety: covered electrical sockets, window grills, safety gates on stairs, no sharp furniture edges, a closed entrance that strangers cannot walk through, and fire extinguishers.
- Space: room for children to play, and a quiet place to nap.
- Outdoor area: fenced, shaded, with safe play equipment.
- How staff behave: do they get down to the child's level, speak kindly, and respond quickly when a child cries?
Staff and Ratio
Ask:
- How many children does each caregiver handle in your child's age group?
- What training do the caregivers have (early childhood care, first aid)?
- Have background checks been done on all staff, including drivers and helpers?
- How long have the current staff been there? Frequent changes are hard on small children.
- Who is in charge when the head of the centre is away?
Food and Hygiene
- Does the centre provide food, or do you send it? If they cook, see the kitchen and the weekly menu.
- How do they handle allergies and special diets? Tell them in writing about any allergy your child has.
- How often are bottles, plates and toys cleaned?
- How often are nappies checked and changed, and who supplies them?
Health and Emergencies
Ask for these in writing:
- Sick-child policy: when a child with fever, cough or diarrhoea must stay home or be picked up.
- Medicines: whether staff will give prescribed medicine, and how it is recorded.
- Injury records: how they tell parents about a fall or bite, the same day.
- Emergency plan: first-aid kit, a trained person on every shift, and the nearest clinic or hospital they use.
Keep your child's doctor's number and vaccination record with the centre.
Pick-Up and Security
- Only authorised adults should be allowed to pick up your child. Ask how they check (photo list, ID, code word).
- Ask what happens if an unknown person comes to collect the child.
- If the centre offers transport, check the vehicle, the driver's licence and whether an attendant travels with the children. Our guide to call taxis and car rentals explains commercial permits and what to check on a vehicle.
- If there is CCTV, ask who can view it and how long recordings are kept.
Daily Routine and Communication
A good centre has a steady routine: arrival, snack, play, meal, nap, activity, evening snack, pick-up. Ask to see it. Also ask how they update parents: a daily note or app message on food, sleep, nappies and mood helps you spot problems early.
Fees and Agreement
Get the fee structure in writing: admission fee, monthly fee, what is included (food, nappies, activities), late pick-up charges, the notice period to leave, and whether fees are refunded for long absences. Fees change over time, so ask for the current rates rather than relying on old numbers.
Settling In
Most children need a few days to a few weeks to settle. Ask whether the centre allows a gradual start: an hour or two on the first days, with a parent staying nearby. Tell the caregivers your child's habits, comfort objects and words for food and toilet.
Red Flags
- You are not allowed to visit or to see where children sleep.
- Too many children for the staff present, or children left alone in a room.
- Dirty toilets or kitchen.
- Vague answers about background checks or the sick-child policy.
- Your child keeps coming home hungry, very dirty or with unexplained injuries.
Next Steps
Shortlist two or three centres near home or work, visit each twice, ask the questions above, get the policies and fees in writing, and start with a gradual settling-in period. You can find day care centres and creches in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
At what age can a child start day care?
Each centre sets its own minimum age; some take infants of a few months, others only toddlers who can walk. Ask the centre what age groups it takes, how it separates infants from older children, and what staff ratio it keeps for each group.
What is a good staff-to-child ratio?
Younger children need more adults. Ask how many children each caregiver looks after in your child's age group, including during nap time and at the busiest hours, and whether the numbers stay the same when staff are on leave.
Can I see my child on CCTV during the day?
Some centres offer live camera access to parents, others show recordings only on request, and some have no cameras. Ask what the policy is, who else can see the feed, and how long recordings are kept.
What happens if my child falls sick at day care?
A good centre has a written sick-child policy: when they will call you, when the child must go home, how they record fever or injuries, and which nearby clinic or hospital they use in an emergency. Ask for it in writing before you join.
