Coimbatore is a starting point for trips to Ooty, Valparai, Kerala, the temples around the city and the airport, so taxis and rental cars are in steady demand. Choices range from app cabs and local call taxis to outstation drivers and self-drive rentals. Most problems come from unclear fares, not the car. This guide explains how each option works and what to agree before you travel.
The Main Options
- App cabs: booked through a mobile app; fare shown upfront for city trips.
- Local call taxis / travels: booked by phone or WhatsApp; common for airport runs, temple trips and outstation travel.
- Outstation cabs with driver: charged per kilometre or per package, plus driver allowance.
- Self-drive rentals: you drive, usually with a deposit and a kilometre limit.
Check the Number Plate
- Yellow plate, black letters: a commercial vehicle permitted for hire. Taxis should have this.
- White plate: a private car. It should not be hired as a paid taxi.
- Black plate, yellow letters: self-drive rental cars under the rent-a-cab scheme.
A commercial vehicle has commercial insurance and permits, which matter if something goes wrong on the trip.
How Fares Are Worked Out
Ask which basis applies and get it in writing:
City and airport trips
- Fixed fare, or per kilometre with a minimum.
- Waiting charges after a free period.
- Night charges, if any.
Outstation trips
- Per kilometre rate, usually with a minimum kilometres per day.
- Kilometres are often counted from the taxi's garage and back, not from your house. Ask.
- Driver bata (daily allowance) and whether night bata is extra.
- Tolls, parking and permit charges for crossing into Kerala or Karnataka.
- Hill charges or entry fees for places like Ooty or Valparai, where applicable.
Packages
- Hours and kilometres included, and the rate for extra hours and kilometres.
A low per-kilometre rate with high minimums and many extras can cost more than a higher all-inclusive quote. Compare the total for your trip.
Choosing the Car
- Number of passengers and luggage: a hatchback, sedan, SUV or a larger van.
- For ghat roads to Ooty or Valparai, ask for a driver who knows hill driving and a car in good condition.
- Ask whether the car has AC and whether AC is charged extra in the hills.

Before You Get In
- Match the car's number and the driver's name with the booking.
- Share the trip details with a family member.
- For long trips, check that the driver is rested and that there is a spare tyre.
- Agree breaks and meal stops in advance.
Self-Drive Rentals
- Carry your valid driving licence; the company will ask for it.
- Read the agreement: deposit, kilometre limit and extra rate, fuel policy (full-to-full or pay-per-use), damage and insurance excess, late return charges.
- Photograph and video the car from all sides on pickup, including existing scratches, the fuel gauge and the odometer.
- Check that the car's insurance and documents are in the car.
- Know the company's breakdown contact.

Paying
- Ask for a trip sheet with start and end kilometres and times.
- Keep toll and parking receipts if they are added to your bill.
- Pay by UPI or card where possible and ask for a bill with the vehicle number.
Planning a Longer Trip
For multi-day holidays with hotels and sightseeing, a registered travel agent can bundle the car and stays. Our guide on choosing a travel agent in Coimbatore covers what to ask.
Red Flags
- A white-plate private car offered for paid hire.
- No clear fare basis, or "we will tell you at the end".
- Kilometre counting from a garage far from your pickup point without telling you.
- Refusal to give a trip sheet or bill.
- For self-drive: no written agreement, or pressure to skip the vehicle inspection.
Next Steps
Decide the trip, passengers and luggage, ask two or three taxi operators for an all-inclusive written quote, and check the plate and driver on the day. You can find call taxis and travels listed in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Which number plate should a taxi have?
In India, taxis and other commercial vehicles carry yellow number plates with black letters, while private cars have white plates. Self-drive rental cars under the rent-a-cab scheme carry black plates with yellow letters. A private white-plate car used as a paid taxi is not permitted for hire.
What is driver bata?
Driver bata is an allowance paid for the driver's food and stay on outstation trips, usually per day or per night. Ask whether it is included in the fare or charged separately, and how it is counted for trips that cross midnight.
Are tolls and parking included in taxi fares?
Often they are not. Ask whether tolls, parking, state permit charges for trips into Kerala or Karnataka, and hill-station entry fees are included in the quote or added at the end, and get the answer in writing.
What should I check before a self-drive rental?
Check the documents and insurance, photograph the car on pickup, confirm the fuel policy, kilometre limit, deposit and damage terms, and keep your driving licence with you. Read the rental agreement fully before signing.
