Valparai is a plantation town in the Anamalai hills, about 1,050 metres above sea level, surrounded by tea and coffee estates, rainforest patches and reservoirs. It is one of the most popular hill trips from Coimbatore, yet far quieter than Ooty. This guide covers the route, the rules at the forest checkposts, what to see on the way and how to plan the trip safely.
Valparai is about 110 km from Coimbatore by road. The usual route is:
Pollachi to Valparai is about 64 km. Allow three to four hours from Coimbatore each way, and more on weekends and holidays when the checkpost queue builds up.
There is also a road from Valparai down to Athirappilly and Chalakudy in Kerala through the Malakkappara checkpost. It passes through dense forest with wildlife on the road and its own checkpost timings, so treat it as a separate trip rather than a quick detour.
The ghat road runs through the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, and entry is controlled by the Forest Department.
These rules change. Check the district administration or Forest Department announcements before you travel.
Many Kovai families stop at the Eachanari Vinayagar temple on the way out of the city. Pollachi is the last big town for fuel, ATMs and a proper meal before the hills.
With extra time, the Masani Amman temple at Anaimalai is a short detour from Pollachi. See our Masani Amman temple guide.
At the foot of the ghat road is the Aliyar reservoir, with a park below the dam. It makes a good break before the climb, or a stop on the way back. Read our Aliyar Dam page.
A little above Aliyar, on the ghat road, is Monkey Falls, a small waterfall managed by the Forest Department where visitors can bathe when it is open. It is closed when the flow is dangerous after heavy rain.
As the road climbs, several viewpoints look back over the Aliyar reservoir and the plains. Park only at marked spots - stopping on a hairpin bend is dangerous for you and for the buses coming down.
Topslip, in the same tiger reserve, is reached by a different road from Pollachi via Sethumadai. It is a separate trip - see our Topslip page.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Leave Coimbatore early, Eachanari, breakfast in Pollachi, Aliyar dam, Monkey Falls (if open), climb the ghat road, check in at Valparai, evening walk in the estates |
| Day 2 | Early morning estate drive and wildlife viewing, Sholayar dam, lunch, start down by early afternoon to clear the ghat road in daylight |
If you need a cab with a driver who knows the ghat road, or a place to stay in Pollachi on the way, you can find local listings in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
About 110 km by road, via Pollachi and Aliyar. Pollachi to Valparai is about 64 km, including the 40 hairpin bends of the ghat road. Plan on three to four hours each way, more with stops.
Yes. Since November 2025, following a Madras High Court order, vehicles entering Valparai need an e-pass, registered online through the Tamil Nadu government's e-pass portal. There is a daily limit on vehicles, so register before you start. Check the current rules before you travel.
It is possible with an early start, but it makes for a long day of driving on a ghat road. An overnight stay is more comfortable and lets you see the estates and viewpoints in the morning, when the mist and wildlife are at their best.
The weather is pleasant most of the year. The south-west monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain, fog on the ghat road and occasional landslides; the months after the monsoon are green and clearer. Avoid driving the ghat road after dark in any season.
