Ceiling fans run for many hours a day in most Coimbatore homes for much of the year, so they add up on the power bill. Changing old fans to efficient ones is one of the simplest ways to save electricity. This guide explains what to check when buying ceiling fans in Kovai. It does not rank brands or list prices.
The BEE Star Label on Fans
Since 1 January 2023, star labelling by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has been mandatory for ceiling fans sold in India. Each new model shows a rating from 1 to 5 stars.
- More stars means the fan moves the same air using less electricity.
- The label also lists the fan's power use and air delivery.
If you see old unlabelled stock at a very low price, ask when it was made. Compare the label figures, not just the look of the fan.
BLDC or Regular (Induction) Fan
Regular induction-motor fan
- The traditional fan type.
- Lower purchase price.
- Uses more electricity than a BLDC fan for similar air flow.
- Speed controlled by a wall regulator.
BLDC (brushless DC) fan
- Uses an electronically controlled motor.
- Usually uses much less electricity and runs cooler.
- Runs longer on an inverter or UPS during power cuts.
- Usually comes with a remote and speed settings; some have timer and sleep modes.
- Costs more to buy.
For fans that run many hours a day, a BLDC fan often pays back the extra cost over time through lower bills. For a rarely used room, a regular star-rated fan may be enough.
One point to note: BLDC fans usually work with a remote or their own controller, not an ordinary wall regulator. Ask the dealer before connecting it to an existing regulator.
Sweep Size for Each Room
A fan's size is its sweep (blade tip to blade tip), usually in millimetres.
- 1200 mm is the most common size for bedrooms and living rooms.
- Smaller sweeps suit small rooms, kitchens or bathrooms.
- Larger sweeps suit big halls; very large rooms may need two fans.
Ask the dealer to suggest a size for your room's length and width.
Ceiling Height and Mounting
- Fans need enough gap between the blades and the floor for safety. If your ceiling is low, ask about a hugger (low-profile) fan.
- High ceilings may need a longer downrod so the fan sits at a useful height.
- The ceiling hook must be strong. Older hooks may be rusted; have them checked.
Power Cuts and Inverters
If your home has an inverter or UPS:
- BLDC fans draw less power, so the inverter can run more fans for longer.
- Ask the dealer about the fan's wattage and tell the inverter dealer how many fans you plan to run.

Other Features Worth Checking
- Remote control: handy in bedrooms; check if the remote is included or extra.
- Anti-dust coating: may reduce how often you need to clean.
- Noise: ask to hear the fan running at full speed in the shop.
- Blade material: aluminium or other; check that blades are balanced.
- Lights: some fans have built-in lights; decide whether you need one.
Installation
Ceiling fans involve ceiling hooks and electrical wiring. Use a licensed electrician, who should:
- Check that the hook and ceiling can take the fan's weight.
- Fix the safety pin and split pin on the downrod.
- Balance the blades so the fan does not wobble.
- Connect the fan and, for BLDC fans, set up the remote.
Wobbling fans should be fixed immediately.
Warranty and Bill
- Ask for the warranty period in writing; motor and electronics warranties may differ.
- Keep the bill with the model number.
- Ask whether installation is free and who does it.
Cleaning and Care
- Switch off the power before cleaning.
- Wipe blades regularly; dust on blades reduces air flow.
- Replace remote batteries when the response slows.
- If a fan makes new noises or wobbles, get it checked early. Our guide to home appliance repair in Coimbatore explains what to ask.
Next Steps
Count the fans you use most, compare BEE star ratings, consider BLDC fans for rooms where fans run all day, choose the right sweep for each room, and have an electrician install them safely. You can find fan dealers and electrical shops in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is the BEE star label compulsory on ceiling fans?
Yes. Star labelling became mandatory for ceiling fans in India from 1 January 2023, so new models must show a rating from 1 to 5 stars. More stars means the fan uses less power for the air it moves.
What is a BLDC fan?
A BLDC (brushless DC) fan uses a different kind of motor with electronic control. It usually uses much less electricity than an older induction-motor fan and runs longer on an inverter. It usually costs more to buy and often comes with a remote.
What fan size do I need for my room?
The 1200 mm sweep is the most common size for bedrooms and living rooms. Very small rooms may use a smaller sweep, and large halls may need a bigger fan or two fans. Ask the dealer based on your room size.
Can I replace a fan myself?
Fan installation involves the ceiling hook and electrical wiring. Use a licensed electrician, who should also check that the hook is strong enough and the connection is safe.
