Power cuts are less frequent than they once were in Coimbatore, but they still happen - during maintenance shutdowns, storms and local faults. A home inverter or UPS keeps lights, fans, internet and a few essentials running until power returns. This guide explains how to size one, which battery to pick and how to install it safely.
People in Kovai use the words interchangeably, but there is a difference:
For a home, most families need an inverter for the house and, if needed, a small UPS for a desktop computer. Our guide to computer repair services in Coimbatore covers the computer side.
Write down what must run during a cut and its wattage (printed on the label or manual):
| Appliance | Typical note |
|---|---|
| LED lights | Low wattage each |
| Ceiling fans | Check the label; BLDC fans use much less |
| Wi-Fi router | Low, but important for work from home |
| TV and set-top box | Moderate |
| Laptop charger | Low to moderate |
| Fridge | Possible on some inverters, but starting current is high - check with the dealer |
Add the watts of everything that could run at the same time. Do not include ACs, water heaters, irons, induction stoves or motor pumps unless you are planning a much bigger system.
Inverters are rated in VA. A common rule of thumb is: VA = total watts / 0.8, then round up to the next standard size. For example, 600 W of load needs at least 750 VA, so an 800 or 900 VA model would suit. A little headroom helps, but a hugely oversized inverter wastes money.
Sine wave or square wave? Pure sine wave inverters give smoother power, run fans more quietly and are safer for electronics. Most new home models are sine wave; confirm before buying.
Backup time depends on battery capacity (Ah), voltage, number of batteries and your load.
Ask the dealer to calculate the backup time for your actual load, and compare warranty terms - many batteries have a full-replacement period followed by a pro-rata period.
Installation matters as much as the brand:
A careful electrician is essential; see our guide on finding reliable electricians in Coimbatore.
If you want both lower bills and backup, a hybrid solar system with batteries may make more sense than a separate inverter. Our rooftop solar guide for Coimbatore explains the options, including the difference between on-grid and hybrid systems.
List what must run during a power cut, add the watts, and work out the VA rating. Ask two dealers for a quote with the inverter model, battery type and warranty, and the backup time for your load. Have a qualified electrician install it in a safe, ventilated spot. You can find inverter and battery dealers listed in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Add up the watts of everything you want to run during a power cut - lights, fans, Wi-Fi router, TV, a laptop. Divide the total by about 0.8 to get the VA rating, and choose the next standard size above it. A dealer can help, but do the list yourself first.
It depends on the battery capacity (in Ah), the number of batteries, the battery voltage and the load you run. A bigger battery or a smaller load gives longer backup. Ask the dealer to calculate backup time for your actual load, not the maximum.
Tubular lead-acid batteries are common for homes with frequent cuts and are known for long life with regular topping up. Flat plate batteries are cheaper but usually wear out sooner. Lithium batteries need no water, charge faster and last longer, but cost more upfront. Choose by budget and how often power fails.
Ordinary home inverters are not meant for ACs, water heaters or large motors. Running them needs a much bigger system designed for that load. Tell the dealer exactly what you want to run so they do not undersize it.
