Coimbatore's dust, rain and busy roads keep car wash centres busy. Options range from a quick exterior wash to full interior detailing, polishing and ceramic coating. Prices and claims vary a lot, so it helps to know what each service actually involves. This guide explains the main services and what to check before you hand over your keys.
Know the Main Services
- Exterior wash: rinse, shampoo and dry. Often includes tyre dressing. Many centres use a foam pre-wash to loosen dirt before hand washing.
- Interior vacuum and wipe: vacuuming seats and mats, wiping the dashboard and door panels.
- Interior deep cleaning: shampooing or steam cleaning seats, carpets and the roof lining, cleaning AC vents and treating leather. Takes several hours and needs drying time.
- Engine bay cleaning: done carefully with electricals protected. Ask how they do it; high-pressure water on electrical parts can cause problems.
- Polishing (paint correction): machine polishing to reduce swirl marks, light scratches and oxidation. It removes a thin layer of clear coat, so it should not be done too often.
- Wax or sealant: a protective layer after washing or polishing that adds shine for a limited time.
- Ceramic coating: a liquid coating that bonds to the paint and lasts longer than wax. Quality depends on the product and, above all, on the preparation.
- Paint protection film (PPF): a clear film applied to the paint to protect against stone chips and minor scratches. It is expensive and must be fitted by trained installers.
- Underbody wash and anti-rust coating: cleans mud from the underside; some centres also apply an underbody coating.
Step 1: Decide What Your Car Needs
A car used daily in the city usually needs regular exterior washes and an occasional interior deep clean. Polishing and coatings are optional, often chosen for new cars or before selling a car. If you are not sure, ask the centre to inspect the paint in daylight and explain what they recommend and why.
Step 2: Visit the Centre
- Is the washing area covered, clean and well drained?
- Do staff use separate buckets or clean mitts and microfibre cloths, not old rags?
- Is there a dust-free area for polishing and coating work?
- Are pressure washers used at a safe distance from the paint and badges?
- How is waste water handled? Some centres recycle water, which is worth asking about in a city that faces water shortages in dry months.
Step 3: Ask for a Written Quote
The quote should list:
- Exactly which services are included (for example: exterior foam wash, interior vacuum, dashboard dressing, tyre shine).
- For detailing: whether seats and roof lining are shampooed, and how long drying takes.
- For polishing: how many stages, and whether scratches will be removed or only reduced.
- For coatings: the product name, number of layers, the preparation steps (decontamination, clay bar, polishing), curing time, and the maintenance washes needed.
- The price including GST and the time needed.
Step 4: Treat Big Claims With Care
Words like "permanent", "10-year" or "scratch-proof" should make you ask more questions.
- No coating makes paint immune to scratches. Coatings mainly make washing easier and add gloss.
- Ask what the warranty covers, for how long, and what you must do to keep it valid (periodic inspection washes are common).
- Get the warranty in writing with the car's registration number and the product details.
- Ask to see cars they have coated a year or more ago, if possible.
Step 5: Protect Your Belongings and the Car
- Remove valuables, documents and cash before handing over the car.
- Note the fuel level and odometer reading, and point out any existing scratches or dents.
- Walk around the car with the staff and take photos before the work starts.
- Ask whether the car will be driven anywhere, and by whom.
Step 6: Check at Pickup
- Inspect the car in daylight, not under shop lights only.
- Look for missed spots, water marks, swirl marks from polishing and residue in gaps.
- Check that seats and carpets are dry; damp interiors can smell musty later.
- Make sure mats, accessories and your belongings are back in place.
- Raise any issues before you pay.
Doorstep Car Wash Services
Doorstep and subscription car wash services are common in apartment complexes. Ask how many cloths they use, whether they rinse before wiping and whether they use car shampoo rather than detergent. A dusty car wiped dry with one cloth every morning can get fine scratches over time.
Look After the Finish Between Washes
- Remove bird droppings and tree sap quickly.
- Park in shade when possible.
- Use a proper car shampoo, not dishwashing liquid.
- Dry with a clean microfibre towel.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between a car wash and detailing?
A car wash cleans the outside, and often vacuums the inside. Detailing is a deeper job: thorough interior cleaning of seats, carpets and roof lining, and paint correction such as polishing to reduce swirl marks, sometimes followed by a protective wax, sealant or coating.
Is ceramic coating worth it?
A ceramic coating can make the paint easier to clean and add gloss for a period, but it does not make a car scratch-proof. Ask what product is used, how many layers, what preparation is included, how long the claimed life is and what maintenance is required, and get the warranty in writing.
How often should I wash my car?
It depends on how much you drive and where you park. Regular gentle washing prevents dust and bird droppings from damaging the paint. Deep interior cleaning and polishing are needed much less often.
Is a doorstep car wash safe for the paint?
It can be, if the washer uses clean microfibre cloths, a proper car shampoo and enough water to rinse off grit first. Dry wiping a dusty car with one cloth can cause fine scratches. Ask how they wash before booking.
