You spend a third of your life on your mattress, yet many people buy one in a few minutes in a shop. Coimbatore has showrooms of national brands, local makers, and plenty of online offers. The choice is wide and the labels are confusing. This guide explains the main mattress types and what to check before you buy in Kovai.
This is a buying guide, not medical advice. If you have back or neck pain, consult a doctor or physiotherapist.
Made from coconut fibre, often bonded with rubber and layered with foam. Coir mattresses are firm and breathable, which many people like in a warm climate. Some find them too hard; a foam topper layer makes them softer.
Polyurethane foam in different densities. Light and affordable. Higher-density foam usually lasts longer than low-density foam. Ask for the density and thickness of each layer.
Softens with body heat and moulds to your shape. It relieves pressure points but can feel warm; many models add cooling layers or gel. Ask how it feels after lying on it for a few minutes, not seconds.
Springs allow airflow, which helps in heat. Quality varies, so check the warranty.
Made from natural or synthetic rubber. Springy, durable and breathable. Ask whether it is natural latex, synthetic or a blend, and ask for it on the bill.
Combines springs with foam or latex layers. Features vary widely; ask for the layer list.
These are general tendencies, not rules. The only real test is lying on it.
Measure the inside of the cot frame, length and width, in inches. Indian mattress sizes are usually listed in inches (for example 72 x 36 for a single, 72 x 72 or 78 x 72 for a king), but sizes vary by brand. A mattress that is too small slides; one that is too big bends at the edges and may lose warranty cover. Custom sizes are often available. If you are also buying a new cot, see our furniture shopping guide.
Thicker is not always better. A tall mattress on a tall cot can be hard for elderly family members to get in and out of. Check the combined height before buying.
Measure the cot, decide on your budget and preferred firmness, lie on a few types in a showroom, and compare layer lists, trial terms and warranty in writing. You can find mattress shops and makers in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
There is no single best type. Coir is firm and breathable, foam and memory foam mould to the body, pocket spring mattresses are bouncy and airy, and latex is springy and durable. The right one depends on how firm you like your bed, your sleeping position, your weight and your budget. Lie on a few before buying.
Not necessarily. Words like 'orthopaedic' are marketing terms, not a medical certification. If you have back pain, consult a doctor or physiotherapist, and choose a mattress that feels supportive and comfortable to you.
Measure the inside of your cot frame (length and width), not the outside. Common Indian sizes are given in inches, such as 72 x 36 for a single or 72 x 72 or 78 x 72 for a king, but check the shop's size chart. Many brands also make custom sizes.
Usually manufacturing defects such as sagging beyond a stated depth. It rarely covers stains, normal softening or damage from a wrong-size cot. Read the warranty card and keep the bill and the label.
