In Coimbatore the air conditioner works hardest from March to May, and that is exactly when every AC technician in Kovai is booked. A little knowledge about what a service should include - and what a "gas problem" really means - helps you avoid paying for work that does not fix anything. This guide explains what to check before you hire, what to ask, and the red flags to watch.
Tell the technician which of these you need. It changes the time, the tools they bring and the cost.
A "service" can mean anything from a ten-minute filter wash to a full wet clean. Ask for a list before work starts. A thorough service normally covers:
| Part | What should be done |
|---|---|
| Air filters | Removed, washed and dried |
| Indoor coil and blower | Cleaned with water or foam; the blower wheel is where the dust and smell collect |
| Drain line | Flushed, so water does not drip inside the room |
| Outdoor unit | Coil and fan cleaned, debris cleared |
| Electrical | Connections, capacitor and cable condition checked |
| Performance | Air temperature at the indoor unit measured before and after |
A technician who measures the air temperature and the current drawn, and explains the readings, is usually one who knows the job.
This is where most money is wasted. The refrigerant ("gas") in an AC runs in a sealed loop and does not get used up. If the gas is low, it has leaked out somewhere - usually at a joint, a flare nut or a corroded coil.
Ask which refrigerant your AC uses - it is printed on the outdoor unit's label (for example R32, R410A or, on older units, R22) - and make sure the technician uses the same one. R22 is being phased out under international rules, so repairing old R22 units can get harder and costlier; that may be a reason to consider replacement if a big repair comes up.
Under warranty: use the brand's authorised service centre. A repair by someone else can void the warranty, especially on the compressor.
After warranty: an experienced local technician can do excellent work and is often quicker to arrive. Judge them on the same things - a clear diagnosis, proper tools (a gauge set and a vacuum pump for any gas work), itemised bills and willingness to come back.
Annual maintenance contracts (AMC): useful if you have several ACs, for example in an office or clinic. Read what is covered - some AMCs include only cleaning visits, not parts or gas.
Frequent tripping, burnt smells at the socket or a flickering supply when the AC starts are electrical problems as much as AC problems. Have an electrician check the wiring and the breaker rating - see our guide on finding reliable electricians in Coimbatore. If you are setting up a new home, plan the AC points with your interior designer so the pipes and drain run neatly.
Note your AC's brand, model, tonnage and refrigerant from the label, and describe the problem clearly when you call. Book the pre-summer service early - February is quieter than April. If you need names to start with, you can find local AC service providers in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Most manufacturers suggest a full service once or twice a year, with the filters cleaned every two to four weeks when the AC is in daily use. In Kovai, a service just before the hot months of March to May is the most useful, and dusty locations may need more frequent cleaning.
No. The refrigerant runs in a sealed loop and should not run out. If the gas is low, there is a leak somewhere. A good technician finds and repairs the leak before refilling; topping up without fixing the leak only buys a few weeks or months.
Cleaning the filters, indoor coil and blower, flushing the drain line, cleaning the outdoor unit's coil and fan, checking the electrical connections and capacitor, and measuring the cooling performance before and after. Ask what is included before the work starts.
For an AC still under warranty, use the brand's authorised service, because outside repairs can void the warranty. After the warranty ends, an experienced local technician can be just as good if they give a clear estimate, use proper tools and bill for parts.
