Buying furniture is one of the bigger spends when you set up or renovate a home in Coimbatore. Showrooms on the main roads, older wood shops, carpenters who build to order, and online stores all compete for the same sofa or cot. This guide explains how to compare them and what to check before you pay.
Before you visit any shop, measure:
Take a phone photo of the room and note where the switches, windows and doors are.
| Material | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Solid wood (teak, rosewood, other hardwoods) | Cots, dining sets, chairs that should last decades | Weight, higher price, ask which wood exactly |
| Rubber wood and other plantation woods | Budget solid-wood furniture | Needs proper seasoning and treatment |
| Plywood (BWR/BWP grades) | Wardrobes, cots with storage, TV units | Grade and thickness, edge banding |
| MDF / particle board | Low-cost ready furniture | Swells if it gets wet; weak screw holding |
| Metal (steel frames) | Cots, chairs, office furniture | Rust finish, welding quality |
"Wood finish" or "wood look" usually means a laminate on board, not solid wood. Ask the seller to write the actual material on the bill. Our guide to choosing a carpenter in Coimbatore explains plywood grades in more detail.
For fitted wardrobes and kitchen storage, a carpenter or modular kitchen supplier may fit the space better than ready furniture. For ready wardrobes, check hinge quality, shelf thickness and whether the unit needs fixing to the wall so it cannot tip.
If you are doing a full home interior, an interior designer can plan furniture and storage together; see our guide on choosing interior designers in Coimbatore.
Ask before you pay:
The bill should list each item with model, material, size, colour, price, delivery date and warranty. Keep it for warranty claims.
Measure first, decide which pieces need solid wood and which can be engineered, compare two or three shops, and get materials, delivery and warranty written on the bill. You can find furniture showrooms and carpenters in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Not always. Solid wood lasts long and can be repaired and polished again, but it is heavy and costs more. Good engineered wood (plywood or boards with proper finish) is lighter, cheaper and fine for wardrobes and modern designs. Poor particle board, however, swells with moisture. Ask exactly what material each part is made of.
Sit on it for a few minutes, check that the frame does not creak or wobble, ask what the frame is made of, ask the foam density and type for the seat, check the stitching and whether the covers are removable, and ask for the warranty on the frame and foam in writing.
Measure the room, the space where each piece will stand, and every door, staircase, lift and corner the furniture must pass through on the way. Many sofas and wardrobes are bought and then cannot be carried in. Take the measurements and a phone photo of the room to the shop.
Online stores give a wide choice and easy comparison, while local showrooms and carpenters let you touch, sit and inspect materials and often customise sizes. Whichever you choose, check return policy, delivery charges, assembly and who handles service.
