A modular kitchen is one of the largest single purchases in a home renovation. In Coimbatore, where many families still cook two or three full meals a day with plenty of tadka and frying, the kitchen has to work hard. This guide explains layouts, materials, finishes and the checks that make the difference between a kitchen that lasts and one that swells at the sink within two years.
Before visiting showrooms, write down:
A designer who asks these questions is more useful than one who opens a catalogue first.
| Layout | Suits |
|---|---|
| Straight (single wall) | Narrow kitchens and flats |
| L-shape | Most homes; good working triangle between sink, hob and fridge |
| U-shape | Larger kitchens with lots of storage needs |
| Parallel (galley) | Long narrow kitchens with two walls |
| Island or peninsula | Open-plan homes with space to spare |
Keep the sink, hob and fridge close enough to move between them easily, with counter space next to the hob for hot vessels.
The cabinet body (carcass) decides how long the kitchen lasts. The area under the sink faces constant moisture.
Ask for the brand, grade and thickness of every board, and check the stamp on the sheets. Our guide on choosing a carpenter in Coimbatore explains board grades in more detail.
Near the hob, pick finishes that tolerate heat and oil, and are easy to wipe.
Granite is the traditional and practical choice in Tamil Nadu - it handles heat and heavy vessels well. Quartz is an alternative with even colour. Ask for the thickness, edge finish and how the sink cut-out will be polished and sealed.
Hardware takes daily wear:
Ask for the brand and load rating of drawer channels - heavy vessel drawers need strong ones.
Finish all plumbing, electrical and wall tiling before the cabinets go in.
Compare at least two dealers item by item. A lower quote often has thinner boards or unbranded hardware.
Write down how your family cooks and what you store, measure the kitchen, and visit two or three dealers with that list. Insist on an item-wise quote naming materials and hardware, finish all services before installation, and check everything before the final payment. For a wider home renovation, see our guide to choosing interior designers in Coimbatore. You can also find modular kitchen dealers listed in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
For the cabinet body, most buyers choose a water-resistant material such as boiling water resistant (BWP) plywood, or moisture-resistant boards or stainless steel for the sink unit. Ask the dealer which grade and brand they use for each part, especially under the sink.
Dealers usually quote per running foot or per square foot, or give an item-wise quote. Prices vary widely with materials, finish and hardware, so ask for an item-wise quote that names each of them and compare two or three dealers.
It depends on the design and the factory's schedule. Ask for dates for measurement, design approval, manufacturing and installation in writing, and make sure plumbing, electrical points and tiling are finished before installation.
Yes, if it is planned for it: a strong chimney or exhaust, space for large vessels and a grinder, easy-to-clean surfaces near the hob, and deep drawers for daily items. Tell the designer how your family cooks.
