Wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, TV units, cots, doors and window frames - most homes in Coimbatore need a carpenter at some point. Good woodwork lasts decades; poor woodwork sags, swells and attracts termites within a few years. This guide explains the materials, what the quote should list, and how to check the work before paying.
For a full renovation, you may want an interior designer to plan the layout first; see our guide on choosing interior designers in Coimbatore.
| Material | Where it is used | Things to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Solid wood (teak, other hardwoods) | Main doors, frames, cots, dining tables | Which wood, seasoned or not, thickness |
| Plywood | Wardrobes, cabinets, lofts | Grade (for example commercial, moisture resistant, boiling water resistant), thickness, brand |
| Block board | Long shelves and doors | Brand and thickness |
| MDF / HDF | Shutters, decorative panels | Suitable only away from water |
| Particle board | Budget ready-made furniture | Avoid in damp areas |
Plywood grades matter. For kitchens and anything near water, ask for a water-resistant grade. Ask for the brand and grade stamped on the sheets, and check the sheets when they arrive.
Hardware is where many jobs cut corners. Ask for named brands of hinges (soft-close if you want them), drawer channels, handles and locks. Cheap channels and hinges are the most common reason drawers stick and shutters sag.
Get quotes from two or three carpenters and compare them item by item.
Keep a small part of the payment until everything is checked and minor fixes are done.
Plan woodwork together with electrical and plumbing points - light inside wardrobes, sockets for the TV unit, water lines under the sink. Finish woodwork before the final coat of paint; our guide on choosing house painters in Coimbatore covers the painting side.
Measure your rooms, list the items you need, and decide on materials and finishes with the help of the table above. Call two or three carpenters, get written quotes with sizes, materials and hardware named, and check the work carefully before the final payment. You can find carpenters listed in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
For wardrobes and cabinets, good-grade plywood is widely used because it is stable and less likely to warp than solid wood panels. Solid wood suits doors, frames and furniture where its strength and look matter. Ask the carpenter which grade and thickness they will use and why.
Some charge per square foot of finished work, some per day, and some a lump sum for the job. Whichever it is, get a written quote with the materials, sizes and hardware named, and whether polish or laminate is included.
Check the house for termites before new woodwork goes in, use treated wood or boards where possible, keep woodwork off damp walls and floors, and consider a termite treatment by a licensed pest control operator for the building.
Open and close every door and drawer, check that shutters are level and hinges are tight, look for gaps and sharp edges, confirm the hardware brand matches the quote, and make sure the site is cleaned.
