A used bike or scooter can save a lot of money, and Coimbatore has many used two wheeler dealers as well as private sellers. But a vehicle with a pending loan, unpaid fines or hidden damage can cost more than a new one. This checklist explains what to check before you buy a second hand two wheeler in Kovai. It is general guidance, not legal advice; for any doubt about documents, ask the Regional Transport Office (RTO) or a lawyer. Procedures and fees change, so check the official portal for the current rules.
Dealer or Private Seller?
- Used vehicle dealers often handle paperwork and may offer a short warranty, but prices include their margin. Ask what the warranty covers, in writing.
- Private sellers may be cheaper, but you handle the checks and the transfer yourself.
- Brand-run certified pre-owned programmes exist for some makers; ask the showroom.
Either way, the checks below apply.
Step 1: Check the Documents
Ask the seller for:
- Registration Certificate (RC), original.
- Insurance policy, valid.
- Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, valid.
- Service records and the original purchase bill if available.
- Seller's ID and address proof, matching the RC owner.
- Both keys.
Check that:
- The owner name on the RC matches the seller's ID. If someone else is selling on the owner's behalf, be extra careful.
- The chassis number and engine number on the RC match the numbers on the vehicle.
- The RC does not show hypothecation (a loan) without a lender's no-objection certificate.
Step 2: Verify Online
- Use the official Parivahan services (website or the mParivahan app of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways) to look up the registration number and compare the details with the RC.
- Check for pending e-challans (traffic fines) on the official e-Challan portal. Agree in writing that the seller clears them before the sale.
- Ask about any accident or police case involving the vehicle. If in doubt, walk away.
Step 3: Inspect the Vehicle
Take a trusted mechanic if you can. If you already use a service centre, our guide to choosing a two wheeler service centre in Coimbatore can help you find one. Check:
- Frame and body: cracks, welding marks, bent handlebars or forks (signs of an accident).
- Engine: starts easily when cold, no unusual noise, no smoke, no oil leaks.
- Clutch and gears (for bikes): smooth shifts, no slipping.
- Brakes: firm, no pulling to one side; check disc or drum condition.
- Suspension: no leaks from the front forks, no bouncing.
- Tyres: tread depth and cracks; check the manufacture date on the sidewall.
- Electricals: headlight, indicators, horn, self-start and battery.
- Odometer: compare with service records; mismatched readings are a warning sign.
Step 4: Test Ride
- Ride on both city roads and a slope if possible.
- Check acceleration, braking and how the vehicle handles at different speeds.
- Listen for rattles and check for vibration in the handlebar.
- Make sure you have a valid driving licence for the vehicle class before riding.
Step 5: Agree the Price and Terms in Writing
- Write a simple sale agreement with the date, time, price, vehicle details, and a line that the seller is responsible for fines and incidents before the handover time.
- Note what is included (helmet, spare key, accessories).
- Pay through a traceable method where possible and keep the receipt.
Step 6: Transfer Ownership
Ownership transfer is done through the RTO, and several steps can be started online on the Parivahan portal. It usually involves:
- The transfer forms signed by seller and buyer.
- The original RC, valid insurance and PUC.
- ID and address proofs of both parties.
- Loan closure / NOC from the lender if the RC shows hypothecation.
- Paying the prescribed fee.
Check the current forms, fees and time limits on the Parivahan portal or with the RTO before you start. Until the RC shows your name, the vehicle legally belongs to the seller, so do not delay.
Step 7: Transfer the Insurance
Ask the insurer to transfer the policy to your name, or buy a new policy. Riding with a policy still in the seller's name can cause problems in a claim.
After You Buy
- Get a full service done: oil, filters, brakes, chain and tyres as needed.
- Keep copies of all documents.
- Update the contact number linked to the vehicle where the portal allows it.

Next Steps
Check the RC, loan status and challans online, inspect the vehicle with a mechanic, take a proper test ride, agree the terms in writing, and complete the RTO transfer and insurance change quickly. You can find used two wheeler dealers in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I check a used bike's registration details?
Use the official Parivahan services of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (website or the mParivahan app) to check the vehicle's registration details against the RC. The owner name, chassis number and engine number should match the papers and the vehicle.
What if the bike was bought on a loan?
If the RC shows hypothecation to a bank or finance company, the seller must close the loan and get a no-objection certificate from the lender, and the hypothecation must be removed from the RC. Do not pay in full until this is done or clearly agreed in writing.
How is ownership transferred?
Ownership is transferred through the Regional Transport Office, usually using the transfer forms signed by the seller and buyer along with the RC, insurance, pollution certificate and ID proofs. Many steps can be started online on the Parivahan portal. Check the current procedure and fees on the portal before you begin.
Should I take a mechanic to inspect the bike?
Yes. A trusted mechanic can spot engine, clutch, brake, suspension and frame problems that are hard to see in a short test ride.
