Coimbatore's busy households, hostels and working professionals increasingly hand over washing, ironing and dry cleaning. The options range from the neighbourhood ironing stall to large dry-cleaning chains and app-based pick-up services. This guide helps you choose one that treats your clothes carefully and stands by its work.
Check each garment's care label. If it says "dry clean only", ask the cleaner to follow it.
App-based and local pick-up services are convenient. Check:
Whether walk-in or pick-up, ask the shop to write on the receipt:
Pointing out existing damage at hand-over avoids later arguments.
When clothes come back, check before the delivery person leaves or before you leave the shop:
Report problems immediately; many shops accept complaints only within a short time.
If you live in a PG or hostel, ask whether laundry is included in the rent, how often, and how items are tracked. Our PG and hostel checklist lists other things to ask. Offices and small businesses can ask for a monthly contract with fixed pick-up days.
Curtains and sofa covers are often cleaned along with a deep home cleaning. Ask the laundry whether they take down and refit curtains, or whether you should arrange it. Housekeeping companies sometimes offer this; see our guide to hiring housekeeping services.
Silk sarees, veshtis, sherwanis and bridal outfits used for weddings deserve extra care. Clean them soon after the function (stains set with time), mention each stain, and store them properly afterwards. If an outfit needs alteration too, your tailor can advise whether to alter before or after cleaning.
Prices vary with item type and service. Ask for the shop's rate card, check whether ironing is included in "wash", whether prices are per piece or per kilo, and what express service costs.
Sort your clothes by care needs, try a service with a few everyday items first, insist on itemised receipts, and check returned clothes immediately. You can find laundries and dry cleaners listed in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Laundry washes clothes in water with detergent. Dry cleaning uses special solvents with little or no water, and is used for fabrics that may shrink, lose colour or shape in water, such as some silks, wool, suits and heavily embellished garments. Follow the garment's care label.
Many pure silk sarees, especially ones with zari borders, are safest with dry cleaning or careful hand-washing as the weaver or seller advises. Tell the cleaner it is pure silk, point out any zari or stone work, and ask how they handle it before handing it over.
Ask about the damage and loss policy before you give clothes: whether they compensate, how much (often a multiple of the service charge, or a capped amount), and within how many days you must complain. Get the item count and any special notes written on the receipt.
Many app-based and local services in Coimbatore offer pick-up and delivery. Check that they give an itemised receipt at pick-up, a clear delivery date, tracking or a contact number, and the same damage policy as a walk-in shop.
