Bridal makeup is one of the most personal wedding decisions. Coimbatore brides choose from salons, freelance makeup artists who travel to the venue, and artists who come from other cities for big weddings. Whoever you choose will be with you in the most photographed hours of your life, so choose carefully. This guide explains what to ask and check.
Decide Your Look First
Collect a few reference pictures, but think about:
- The muhurtham look: traditional, with a silk saree and temple jewellery, often in the early morning.
- The reception look: often different - lighter or more glamorous, with a lehenga or gown, in the evening.
- Hairstyle: traditional plait with flowers, bun, or open styles.
- Saree or dupatta draping: some artists include it, some do not.
Share these with shortlisted artists and ask how they would adapt them to your face and skin.
Look at Their Own Work
Ask for a portfolio of brides they made up themselves:
- Look for brides with skin tones and features similar to yours.
- Check unedited or lightly edited photos and videos, not only filtered social media posts.
- Look at photos taken hours after the makeup (at the reception or the end of the event) to see if it lasted.
- Ask for the contact of a recent bride, if possible.
Book a Trial
A trial session a few weeks before the wedding helps you:
- See the look with your actual saree colours and jewellery.
- Test how long it lasts in Coimbatore's weather and under hall lights.
- Check that you are comfortable with the products and feel like yourself.
- Do a patch test for any new product.
Take photos in daylight and with flash during the trial. Ask whether the trial is paid and whether that amount is adjusted in the final fee.
Products and Skin Safety
- Ask what brands and products they use, and check that products are sealed and within their expiry date.
- Ask about hygiene: clean brushes, disposable applicators for eyes and lips.
- Tell the artist about allergies, sensitive skin or any treatment you are taking.
- If you have a skin condition, consult a dermatologist well before the wedding; do not try a new facial or treatment in the last few days.
Timing on the Wedding Day
Morning muhurthams in Coimbatore can be very early. Work out:
- Muhurtham time and when photos start.
- How long makeup, hair and draping will take (often two to three hours or more for the bride).
- Whether the artist also does the mother, sisters or bridesmaids - which adds time and may need an assistant.
Write the arrival time, the number of people and the venue into the booking. Ask what happens if the artist falls ill: do they have a backup artist?
Work With Your Other Vendors
Your makeup artist, tailor and photographer all shape how you look. Share the blouse design and saree colours with the artist, and tell your wedding photographer when the makeup will finish so the getting-ready photos are planned.
Ask the hall for a clean room with good light, power points and a mirror; our guide to wedding halls in Coimbatore lists what to check when you book.
What the Booking Should Say
- Date, venue and functions covered (muhurtham, reception, engagement).
- Number of looks, and whether hairstyling, draping and flower setting are included.
- Arrival time and approximate duration.
- Makeup for family members, with the number of people.
- Total fee, advance, balance due date.
- Travel charges if the venue is outside the city.
- Cancellation and postponement terms.
Red Flags
- Portfolio with only heavily filtered or downloaded images.
- Refusal to say which products they use.
- No written booking, or a vague arrival time.
- Double-booking on busy muhurtham days without an assistant plan.
Next Steps
Shortlist two or three artists from their own work, book a trial with a patch test, fix the timing backwards from the muhurtham, and get everything in writing. You can find makeup artists and beauty salons listed in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Should I book a makeup trial before the wedding?
Yes, if the artist offers one. A trial shows how the look suits your skin, outfit colours and jewellery, how long it lasts, and how it appears in photos. Some artists charge for trials and adjust the fee if you book. Do the trial a few weeks before the wedding.
What is the difference between HD and airbrush makeup?
Both are terms artists use for finishes designed to look smooth on high-resolution cameras. HD makeup usually refers to lightweight products applied by hand or brush; airbrush makeup is sprayed on with a machine. Results depend more on the artist's skill and your skin than on the label, so judge by their actual work.
How early should the makeup artist arrive on the wedding day?
Bridal makeup, hairstyling and saree draping together often take two to three hours or more. Work backwards from the muhurtham time and photo sessions, add buffer time, and write the arrival time into the booking.
What if I have sensitive skin or allergies?
Tell the artist in advance, ask what products they use, and request a patch test during the trial. If you have a skin condition or a history of reactions, consult a dermatologist before the wedding.
