Ramar Temple: Serene Abode of Lord Rama in Coimbatore
The Ramar Temple (Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple) in Ram Nagar, Coimbatore, is a well-loved temple dedicated to Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the ideal of dharma (righteousness). Close to Gandhipuram, in the middle of one of the city’s busiest areas, it is a calm place for prayer for people working and shopping nearby.
History of the Temple
Local accounts of the temple’s history say that in 1914 a group of lawyers led by K.S. Arthanareeswara Aiyer asked the Collector of Coimbatore for land to build homes, and that in 1928 about 85 cents of land belonging to Dewan Bahadur Sri Muthu Ramaswamy Kalingarayar was acquired for a temple. The temple was consecrated on 5 February 1933. According to the same accounts, the locality of Ram Nagar takes its name from this Ramar temple.
