Karamadai Ranganathar Temple: Divine Abode near Coimbatore
The Karamadai Ranganathar Temple (Arulmigu Ranganathaswamy Temple, Karamadai; also spelt Karaimadai) is a sacred Vishnu temple in the town of Karamadai, on the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam highway. Dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, it is one of the best-known Perumal temples in the Coimbatore region and draws huge crowds for its annual chariot festival in the Tamil month of Maasi.
What makes the temple unusual is the form of the deity. Here Lord Ranganatha is a swayambu (self-manifested) deity, and only His face is seen - unlike Srirangam and most Ranganatha temples, where He is shown reclining on the serpent Adisesha.
The Legend
According to the temple legend, a herdsman noticed that one of his cows had stopped giving milk. Following it, he found it pouring its milk onto an anthill. When the anthill was cut, blood flowed from it, and the face of Ranganatha was found beneath it, in a place where the Kattariyar tribe lived. Devotees built mandapams around the spot, and the temple grew up there. Ranga of Karamadai is also worshipped by Kurumba communities of the region (see Kurumba worship and gods).
