If you have lived in Kovai for more than six months, you have heard of Eachanari Vinayagar Temple. It is about 12 kilometers from the city on Pollachi Road. Almost every auto driver knows the way. And almost every local has an opinion on the best time to go.
But if you have never been on a Friday – especially the first Friday of the Tamil month – you have not really seen the temple at its busiest and most festive.
Here is a practical guide to visiting on a Friday: when to go, how to get there, and what to carry.
The presiding deity is a large Vinayagar idol, about 6 feet high and 3 feet wide. According to tradition, the idol was being carried by cart from Madurai to the Perur Pateeswarar Temple when the cart's axle broke at Eachanari, and the idol was installed where it stopped. The temple is under the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department.
Most temples have special days. Some have Tuesday for Amman temples. Some have Saturday for Saniswaran. At Eachanari Vinayagar, Friday draws the biggest crowds.
Many devotees believe that prayers here on a Friday are especially fruitful. People come before exams, before starting a new venture or buying a vehicle, and with family prayers of every kind.
Is it true? That is between you and God. But the crowd on Friday morning shows how many people believe it.
1. Go early. The temple opens at 5 AM. The first hour or so is usually the calmest; as the morning goes on, the queue grows, and late morning on a Friday can mean a long wait.
2. Buy offerings before you enter. Shops outside the temple sell coconuts, flowers, kumkum and other offerings. Compare prices and buy what you need before joining the queue.
3. Avoid Pournami (full moon) Fridays and festival days if you are short of time. Pournami is already crowded in any temple, and when it falls on a Friday the queue is longer still. Vinayagar Chathurthi and the first Friday of a Tamil month are also very busy.
4. Check the prasadam counter. The temple counter sells prasadam; what is available varies by day, so ask at the counter.
5. Take your time in the prakaram. After darshan, walk around the inner corridor and the smaller shrines instead of rushing out with the crowd.
As of September 2026, the HR&CE listing gives the temple timings as 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, open through the day (it does not close in the afternoon). Timings can change on festival days - check before you go.
| Day | Temple hours | Calmer times |
|---|---|---|
| Monday - Thursday | 5 AM - 10 PM | Early morning, early afternoon |
| Friday | 5 AM - 10 PM | Right after opening; late evening |
| Saturday - Sunday | 5 AM - 10 PM | Early morning |
Evening tip: Friday evening is crowded but also lovely, with the lamps lit. If you want the evening atmosphere with a shorter wait, go later in the evening, well before closing time.
By bus (cheapest, easiest):
Town buses and Pollachi-bound buses from Ukkadam and Gandhipuram that run along Pollachi Road stop at Eachanari. Ask the conductor for the Eachanari temple stop; the temple is right by the road.
By own vehicle:
From the city, go to Ukkadam and take Pollachi Road south, through Kurichi and Sundarapuram, past Malumichampatti, to Eachanari. Parking fills up early on Fridays, so arrive early.
By auto or cab:
Autos and app cabs are easy to get from anywhere in the city. Agree on the auto fare before you get in, or use the meter or app fare.
Bring:
Offerings for Vinayagar – coconuts, bananas, betel leaves, flowers (if you want)
Small change for the hundi and archanai tickets
Water bottle – the queue can be long, especially in summer
A cap or sunglasses for waiting outside in the sun
Do not bring:
Non-vegetarian food anywhere near the temple (obvious but people still try)
Large bags – travel light
Cameras inside the main sanctum – photography of the deity is not allowed
Many people combine Eachanari with other temples on the same trip. See our guide to famous temples in Coimbatore to plan a temple circuit.
We have been listing this temple in our directory for over 15 years. In that time, we have seen the road widen, the crowd multiply, and the parking get worse. But the feeling inside – the smell of ghee lamps, the sound of the bell, the sight of the large Vinayagar – that has not changed.
If you go on a Friday, tell us if the waiting time has changed. We keep our information updated only when locals like you call us.
