Coimbatore has laptop showrooms, brand stores, computer bazaars and many sellers of refurbished machines. The choice is wide, and the spec sheets are confusing. This checklist helps you buy a laptop that fits your work and your budget, and avoid problems with warranty and after-sales service later.
Step 1: Start With What You Will Use It For
Write down the main uses before you visit a shop. It keeps the salesperson's suggestions honest.
- Students and home use: browsing, online classes, documents, video calls. A mid-range processor, 8 GB RAM and a 256-512 GB SSD are usually enough.
- Office and business: spreadsheets, accounting software, many browser tabs. Look for 16 GB RAM, a comfortable keyboard and good battery life.
- Programming, design and video editing: a faster processor, 16 GB or more RAM, a larger SSD and possibly a dedicated graphics card.
- Gaming: a dedicated graphics card and good cooling matter most; these laptops are heavier and have shorter battery life.
- Travel: weight, battery life and a sturdy build come first.
Step 2: Understand the Main Specifications
- Processor (CPU): newer generations are usually faster and more efficient than older ones with a similar name. Compare the full model number, not just "i5" or "Ryzen 5".
- RAM: 8 GB minimum for most people, 16 GB for heavier work. Ask whether it can be upgraded.
- Storage: an SSD, not a hard disk, for the main drive. 512 GB gives room to grow.
- Display: Full HD (1920 x 1080) is the common standard. Check brightness if you will work near windows or outdoors, and try the screen in the shop.
- Battery: manufacturers' battery claims are measured in ideal conditions. Read independent reviews for real-world figures.
- Ports: count the USB ports and check for HDMI, a card reader or a headphone jack if you need them. Fewer ports means buying adapters.
- Keyboard and touchpad: type on it in the shop. You will use them every day.
- Weight: lift it. A difference of half a kilo matters if you carry it daily.
Step 3: Check the Operating System and Software
- Ask which operating system is pre-installed and whether it is genuine and activated.
- If you need office software, ask whether a licence is included or has to be bought separately.
- Be careful with "free" software installed by the shop. Use only licensed copies; pirated software can carry malware and legal risk.
Step 4: Check the BIS Mark
Laptops sold in India must be registered with the Bureau of Indian Standards under its Compulsory Registration Scheme. The label on the laptop or the box carries the BIS standard mark with a registration number (R-number). You can check a registration number on the BIS website. A machine with no BIS mark, especially an imported "grey market" unit, may also have no valid Indian warranty.
Step 5: Warranty and Service
- Ask how long the manufacturer's warranty is and whether it is carry-in or on-site.
- Check whether the warranty is valid across India and where the nearest authorised service centre in Coimbatore is.
- Register the warranty on the manufacturer's website using the serial number soon after you buy, and check that the warranty start date matches your bill date.
- Extended warranty and accidental damage protection are optional. Read what they cover before paying.
Step 6: Inspect the Laptop Before You Leave
- Open the sealed box in front of you if possible and check the serial number on the laptop matches the box and the bill.
- Check the screen for dead pixels and uneven backlight.
- Test the keyboard, touchpad, webcam, speakers, microphone, Wi-Fi and every port.
- Make sure the charger and all listed accessories are in the box.
Buying a Refurbished or Second Hand Laptop
Refurbished laptops can be good value for students and small offices, but check more carefully:
- Buy from a seller who gives a GST invoice and a written warranty.
- Check the battery health (most operating systems can show a battery report) and ask whether the battery was replaced.
- Look for cracks near the hinges, missing screws, a worn keyboard and marks of liquid damage.
- Confirm the operating system is genuine and activated.
- Make sure any previous owner's accounts are removed and the device is not locked to a company or school account.
- For a private sale, ask for the original bill so you know the laptop is not stolen.
Protect Your Data From Day One
- Set a password or PIN and turn on the built-in disk encryption if available.
- Install updates and keep the built-in security protection on.
- Set up a backup to an external drive or cloud storage.

Next Steps
List your uses, shortlist two or three models, compare the full specifications and warranty terms, check the BIS mark and the bill, and test the laptop before you leave the shop. You can find laptop dealers and computer shops in the Kovai Yellow Pages directory.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How much RAM do I need in a laptop?
For browsing, office work and online classes, 8 GB is a comfortable minimum today. For programming, photo or video editing and heavy multitasking, 16 GB or more is better. Check whether the RAM can be upgraded later, because on many thin laptops it is soldered.
Should I choose an SSD or a hard disk?
Choose an SSD for the main drive. It makes the laptop start and open programs much faster. If you need a lot of storage for videos or photos, add an external hard disk later.
What should I check on the bill?
The bill should show the shop's name and GSTIN, the exact model number, the serial number of your laptop, the price with tax and the date. You need it for warranty claims.
Is a refurbished laptop a good idea?
It can be, if it comes from a seller who tests it, gives a written warranty and an invoice, and lets you check the battery health and physical condition. Avoid units with no bill or warranty.
